Part of running your own business is to make sure you're taking care of yourself spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Which is way—although I’ve never done this before—I’m literally letting you STEAL my morning routine!
Do you ever get through your entire day dreading the fact that it’s now 5pm, you’re exhausted, and you got nowhere near completing your goals for the day? That was me every single day. At the end of a mentally exhausting day, I had no idea how I was going to read a devotional, work out, clean my house, and wind down enough to have a good night’s sleep.
That’s when it hit me that I should knock it all out at the beginning of the day. Every. Single. Thing.
Let me tell you, friends, implementing this routine has been life-changing for me. It’s as if I can sail through the rest of my day free from any to-do list item hanging over my head. Not only that, but it energizes me as I go through my day, whereas at the end of the day I’m struggling to get enough energy to complete even one item.
Here’s my formula for the perfect morning routine. You of course might want to tweak this to your needs…feel free!
7:30-7:45am – Wake up, drink 8 ounces of water, and settle into waking up. 15 minutes TOPS.
7:45-8:15am – 30-minute walk, preferably outside. There’s something about the change of perspective outside, the fresh air and natural light, and especially the forward movement that helps my body get on course and ready for the day.
8:15-8:45 – Shower, get dressed, make my bed (make this one priority), and if there’s any time left over, clean my bedroom. In other words, I do NOT let myself leave my bedroom because there is always something to organize or clean in there. We spend 1/3 of our lives in our room. It should be an organized, neat oasis.
8:45-8:55am – Set a timer on my phone and clean for NO MORE THAN 10 minutes. I fly through my cleaning knowing I only have 10 minutes to get it done, and it’s a way easier pill to swallow knowing that I’m only cleaning a bite-sized piece of my house. By the end of the week, I’ve cleaned my house for 50 minutes and I come home each day to a little more order.
8:55-9:20am – Breakfast/Coffee and 25-minute devotional and prayer. I personally like to watch devotionals on YouTube while I eat my breakfast. I believe this is the single most important part because it’s as if taking 25 minutes for my spiritual life supernaturally gives me even more time in my day. I can’t explain it, but I will say I’ve never regretted it, even on my busiest of days!
9:20am-9:45am – 25 minutes of professional development reading. My most recent book was The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and let me just say that book helped me so much that any time it took me to read it, saved me time ten times over when I implemented the practices in that book.
9:45am-10:00am – Hair and makeup, grab a protein shake, and head out the door.
Now I know what you’re thinking…“I can’t leave my house at 10:00am!” It’s true that my schedule might be different than yours, but you can tweak my routine as needed. Maybe cut the time down to half, or on Tuesdays and Thursdays do professional development reading and on MWF, devotionals. Maybe wake up 30 minutes earlier than I do. You’ll need to modify it for sure, but definitely use this as a template. It’s LIFE-CHANGING!
P.S. – I’ll be documenting my success, so be sure to follow me on Instagram so that we can go through our morning routines together!
